After a short flight from Birmingham airport to Verona, our inter railing adventure around Italy had begun. Trying to escape the tourism nightmare of Venice, (avoid at all costs in the peak of summer), we settled for Verona, enticed by its romantic settings and authentic Italian feel. We bounced our suitcases down the cobbled street, the balmy Italian sun beating down on our arms as we head to our hostel. ‘The Hostello’ is a quirky family run hostel in the heart of Verona. Once we cooled off and played with the hostels resident cat we decided to venture out into the city.

We wandered over the bridge in search for some lunch. The cobbled streets were overflowing with little restaurants and wine bars, stalls brimming with fresh fruit and jazz music serenading us as we tucked into big bowls of pasta and crisp white wine. I recommend ‘Osteria Locandina Lappello’ for authentic Italian food at a reasonable price, alongside outdoor seating where you can sit with a drink and watch the world go by.

When in Italy, sampling an Aperol Sprit is a must. Everywhere you go you’ll see the locals sipping on the orange beverage. We spent the majority of our time in Verona sat at our favourite bar ‘Duchi Café’ where they offer a wide variety of cocktails and nibbles, as well as exceptionally friendly and attentive staff.

Once you’ve eaten and drank your way around Verona, Casa di Giulietta, (Juliet’s House) is a worthwhile visit. Shakespeare put Verona on the map, setting his tale of the star-crossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet in the city which is now often referred to as the City of Lovers. Tourists are welcome to pose on Juliet’s balcony, as well as with her statue that is believed to bring luck to those who touch it. I’d recommend visiting the attraction earlier in the morning to avoid the hectic crowds that can form. Then in the evening you can treat yourself to a cocktail with a view. If you head to Hotel Milano and get the lift to the top floor, you'll find yourself at a terrace bar with views of the Verona theatre.
